You may be able to stop paying for Grammarly if your main use is reviewing text that you are willing and permitted to paste into ChatGPT. That is a narrower claim than replacing every part of Grammarly. The deciding factor is often where the review happens and whether you remember to do it.

The [Grammarly](/tools/grammarly) and [ChatGPT](/tools/chatgpt) catalog entries separate their overlapping writing capabilities from the parts that are harder to replace. Use this guide to test your own routine, including short messages and the documents you are least comfortable sharing with another service.

## Who this is for

This is for someone who already uses ChatGPT and wants to review ordinary emails, proposals, articles or internal documents. It is particularly relevant when you intentionally set aside time for editing rather than relying on suggestions while typing. You still need to make the final decisions about meaning, voice and factual accuracy.

It is not a recommendation to move confidential text into an unapproved account. Confirm which service and account your organisation permits for the material. If a document cannot leave its current environment, a workflow based on copying it elsewhere fails before the quality comparison starts.

Writers working in a second language should test the kinds of ambiguity that matter to them. A rewrite that sounds fluent can still change a promise, make a request more forceful or remove an important qualification. The goal is communication you understand and approve, not simply fewer marked sentences.

## The honest comparison

[Grammarly’s current plans](https://www.grammarly.com/plans) cover spelling and grammar assistance, with additional writing and team features depending on the plan. Its availability within writing surfaces is part of the value. A tool that catches a mistake before you send a hurried message can be useful even when another tool can review the same paragraph on request.

[OpenAI describes ChatGPT](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6783457-what-is-chatgpt) as an assistant for tasks including drafting and revising text, and warns that output can be inaccurate. You can ask it for a constrained edit, an explanation of a sentence or alternative wording. You must still supply the right context and inspect the result.

The replacement path here is deliberate review: copy an approved draft, ask for limited changes, compare the versions and transfer accepted edits back. It does not assume that ChatGPT provides identical inline behaviour across every application. Nor does a general conversation establish that text is original or satisfy a required plagiarism-checking process.

The [existing-assistant editing workflow](/workflows/drop-grammarly-with-existing-ai) offers a repeatable procedure. Keep spelling fixes separate from stylistic rewrites. That makes it easier to identify an assistant changing your argument when you only asked it to correct grammar.

## When to keep paying

Keep Grammarly when its presence in your everyday writing prevents mistakes that a separate review step consistently misses. Short messages are a useful test. If you send many of them and rarely pause to copy text into another tool, the theoretical overlap may not translate into an effective replacement.

Keep it when your team relies on shared terminology, snippets or style guidance available in its current arrangement. A personal prompt is not automatically a maintained team standard. Someone needs to own the instructions, distribute updates and check whether colleagues apply them consistently.

Keep a required specialist review process when the assistant cannot demonstrate the same outcome. Do not treat confident comments about originality, sources or academic acceptability as a substitute for your institution’s rules. Check the actual requirement with the responsible reviewer rather than asking either product to certify itself.

There is also a middle option: test whether the free Grammarly offering covers the inline checks you need while ChatGPT handles occasional longer edits. Confirm the current feature boundaries on the vendor page and in your account. Do not assume a trial entitlement will remain after you stop paying.

## How to test before cancelling

Collect a small set of your own representative writing: a quick email, a longer explanation and a document with precise terminology. Remove confidential details if necessary. Keep untouched copies so that you can compare changes against your actual intent rather than relying on memory.

Use a constrained instruction such as: “Correct clear spelling and grammar errors. Preserve my meaning, level of certainty and terminology. List optional style suggestions separately, with reasons.” Provide the audience and any words that must remain unchanged. Ask questions about uncertain edits instead of accepting a complete rewrite immediately.

For each sample, inspect names, dates, numbers, negations and commitments. Check whether “may” became “will,” whether a limitation disappeared, and whether a technical phrase was replaced with something less precise. These are editorial checks you own; an assistant’s explanation does not prove its edit was right.

Now test the work around the text. Copy the accepted changes into the real destination and inspect formatting, links and paragraph breaks. Measure the entire review, including switching applications and comparing versions. Then try the same routine during a busy day, when you are more likely to skip it.

Keep a short record of missed errors, unwanted rewrites and abandoned reviews. Ask a trusted reader to assess a few final drafts without being told which process produced them. You are looking for useful communication and a sustainable habit, not a contest over which tool produces more suggestions.

Only change billing after the process works across the writing that matters to you. Save reusable instructions and note which documents still need a different review route. If your trial depended on an assistant usage allowance you cannot reliably access, include that limitation in the decision.

## Check your own numbers

Start with your current Grammarly invoice, billing period and renewal date. The potential saving is the charge you can actually avoid, minus any increase in the assistant plan or other editing tools needed for the replacement. Do not count a full annual charge as an immediate monthly refund unless your account terms establish that outcome.

Track the extra review effort separately. Copying one important document can be reasonable while copying every short message may be cumbersome. Compare the observed effort against the frequency of your writing, including the days when you are busiest.

Use the [subscription audit](/audit) to include the rest of your stack. If ChatGPT is already retained for other work, its incremental cost may be unchanged; if editing is the only reason to retain it, include that bill. Count a cancelled subscription once, however many writing tasks it used to cover.
