# Canva

> Template-based online design tool for social posts, presentations, print and short videos.

Canva is a browser and mobile design editor built around a very large template library. The free plan covers most basic design work; paid plans add premium content, brand kits, the background remover, one-click resize, scheduling and a larger AI allowance. Business (which replaced Teams for new customers) and Enterprise add shared brand controls, locked templates and approvals.

## Capabilities

| Capability | Fit | Plans | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design social media graphics (`social-media-graphics`) | native | all | Free plan watermarks premium elements; Resizing a design to other formats needs Pro or above; Template-driven look; output can resemble other Canva users' posts |
| Create YouTube thumbnails (`youtube-thumbnails`) | native | all | Background remover needs Pro or above; Less control over compositing and text effects than Photoshop |
| Design print collateral (menus, flyers, posters) (`print-collateral`) | native | all | No full CMYK colour workflow or spot colours like InDesign; Long multi-page documents are awkward; Print ordering is not available in every country |
| Maintain brand templates and brand kits (`brand-templates`) | native | pro, business, teams, enterprise | Free has only 1 Brand Kit limited to 3 colours; Locked templates and approvals need Business, Teams or Enterprise; Pro is a single-person licence; it cannot share a brand kit with a team |
| Collaborate on designs in real time (`collaborative-design`) | native | all | Approval workflows and admin controls need Business, Teams or Enterprise; Version history is basic compared with design tools built for agencies |
| Create presentation decks (`presentation-decks`) | strong | all | PPTX export can shift fonts and layouts; Weaker for data-heavy decks than PowerPoint or Google Slides |
| Edit and retouch photos (`photo-editing`) | partial | pro, business, teams, enterprise | Background remover and most AI photo tools need Pro or above; No layers, masks or pixel-level retouching; Free plan has only basic adjustments |
| Generate images from text (`image-generation`) | partial | all | Free AI allowance is small; Image quality trails dedicated image models; AI allowances are capped; heavy users need the AI Pass add-on or top-ups |
| Schedule social media posts (`content-scheduling`) | partial | pro, business, teams, enterprise | Needs Pro or above; No social inbox, analytics depth or approval queues like dedicated schedulers |
| Edit videos (`video-editing`) | partial | all | Not suited to long-form editing; Limited audio tools and colour control; Premium stock clips need a paid plan |
| Manage design and media assets (`design-asset-management`) | partial | all | Not a full DAM: limited metadata, rights tracking and approval history; Storage caps per plan |
| Build a business website (`website-building`) | partial | all | No CMS or blog; Limited SEO and form features; Custom domains may need a paid plan or a domain purchase |

## Why people pay for it

- Premium templates, photos and elements without watermarks
- Background remover and one-click resize across formats
- Brand Kits so logos, fonts and colours are one click away
- Team brand controls: locked templates and approvals so non-designers stay on-brand
- Larger AI allowance for generating images, text and drafts
- Scheduling designs directly to social accounts

## Reasons to keep paying

- Brand kits plus locked brand templates let a whole team produce on-brand work without a designer
- Real-time collaboration, comments and approvals in a tool everyone already knows
- A very large library of templates and stock that saves hours per design
- Fast, precise-enough layout for print with built-in print ordering
- Existing designs live in Canva's format; rebuilding a template library elsewhere takes real time

## Risks

- **vendor_lock_in** (medium): Editable templates only work inside Canva. Leaving means keeping flat exports or rebuilding templates.
- **functionality_loss** (medium): Downgrading from Pro to Free removes premium elements, background remover, resize and extra brand kits; designs using premium content become watermarked.
- **ip_licensing** (low): Premium stock is licensed for use within designs under Canva's licence terms; reuse outside those terms is restricted.
- **collaboration** (medium): Pro is single-person. Teams sharing one Pro login breaks the terms; moving to Business costs per person.

Data portability: moderate — Designs export as PNG, JPG, PDF, SVG (paid), MP4 and PPTX, but not as an editable file other design tools can open with full fidelity. Brand kits and templates must be rebuilt elsewhere.
