# Replace occasional Descript edits with an available editor and assistant

> Use an editor you already have for simple cuts, and an assistant for a checked edit plan and show notes. This is a manual workflow for occasional videos, not a replacement for transcript-driven production.

- Outcome: Publish a short, accurately edited video with checked supporting text.
- Replaces: Descript (task_specific)
- Uses: Microsoft 365 — Use Clipchamp in an already-paid Business Standard account only after confirming administrator access and the required export options; other editions need their own eligibility check.; Claude — Draft an edit plan and supporting text from an approved transcript or your notes.
- Extra monthly cost: $0 — Conditional on already having the required accounts, eligible features and sufficient capacity; no upgrade is assumed. If the test requires added storage, seats or a plan change, enter that incremental cost before treating this as a saving.
- Difficulty: moderate; skill: basic; setup: Allow one focused pilot session, then a normal work cycle to test the result; this is an editorial planning estimate.
- Evidence: editorial; illustrative example: false; last reviewed 2026-10-16

## Good fit for
- Occasional single-speaker explainers with a few obvious cuts
- Teams already licensed for the required Clipchamp editing and export features

## Not a fit for
- Frequent podcast or interview production where transcript-based editing saves substantial time
- Projects requiring Descript compositions, specialised audio treatment or a familiar collaborative review process
- Work that cannot be transferred to the selected editor without losing required assets or permissions

## Before
Edit an existing recording in Descript and produce the final video and associated text.

## After
Work from the original media in an available timeline editor; use the assistant to organise text, then verify the export yourself.

## Steps

### 1. Inventory one representative project

Keep the original recordings, project files, transcript and final export. List what you actually use Descript for before choosing a replacement. Review [Descript pricing](https://www.descript.com/pricing) and your current bill; a lower plan may suit occasional work better than migration.

### 2. Confirm editor entitlement

Open Clipchamp with your work account and confirm the editor, not merely the video player, is available. Microsoft documents licence and administrator prerequisites. Try a small export with your own media before moving a project. On a Mac, iMovie trimming is another option if you already have it; that variant is outside the Microsoft 365 baseline here.

### 3. Prepare a checked edit plan

Give the assistant a transcript you are allowed to use, or your own timecoded notes. Ask for proposed cuts and a reason for each one. Do not ask it to invent transcript timings or assume it has listened to the media. Review decisions that change a speaker’s meaning.

### 4. Apply cuts in the editor

Import a copy of the media, place it on the timeline, and use trimming or splits to remove the approved sections. Keep the original untouched. Work in short sections so you can compare each change. This process is manual; editing the assistant’s transcript does not edit the recording.

### 5. Export and check the actual file

Export the intended delivery format and play the saved file outside the editor. Listen at every cut, check picture and sound alignment, and verify any captions against the audio. Confirm required export quality and asset licensing without adding an unplanned paid feature.

### 6. Measure repeat work before cancellation

Repeat on an ordinary project and record the time spent on cuts, corrections and export. Keep Descript if the extra handling offsets the bill or if important projects cannot be reopened elsewhere. Store a usable archive and document how the next person will edit it.

## Prompts

### Create a conservative edit list
Suggest cuts without changing meaning or inventing timecodes.

```text
Review this authorised transcript or timecoded notes: {{transcript}}. Audience: {{audience}}. Target length: {{target_length}}. Propose a table of start marker, end marker, reason and meaning at risk. Use only supplied markers; flag missing timing. Preserve qualifications and uncertainty. Do not claim you edited any media.
```

### Draft checked show notes
Write text that stays within the source recording.

```text
Using only {{approved_notes}}, draft a title, a short description and an ordered topic list for {{audience}}. Do not invent claims, links or timestamps. List unclear details for a human to check.
```

## Limitations
- This does not reproduce Descript transcript editing, integrated production or project interchange.
- Clipchamp availability and features differ between account types and licences; test the account actually used for work.
- An assistant’s text suggestions do not establish audio quality, caption accuracy or an acceptable final video.
- Manual editing and transcription can make this slower despite lower subscription spend.

## Verification checklist (run before cancelling)
- [ ] The editor and required export settings are available in the retained account without an assumed upgrade.
- [ ] Every cut preserves the speaker’s meaning and has clean audio boundaries.
- [ ] The final exported file has been played outside the editor and reviewed by a recipient.
- [ ] Captions, names, numbers and supporting text have been checked against the source.
- [ ] Original media and necessary project information are archived before the Descript billing change.

## Savings methodology
Monthly saving = the bill you can actually stop paying, minus replacement upgrades, storage and seats, minus any retained subscription cost. Use your invoice and current vendor pricing pages; count a cancelled subscription once. Track migration and ongoing manual work separately. Cancellation is justified only when every paid use you need has passed the pilot.
