Use Canva Free instead of a paid Figma seat for simple graphics

For non-designers making a few static graphics or slides, test a rebuild in Canva Free. Do not use this as a substitute for UI prototyping, a design system or developer handoff.

Is it for you?

Today

Use a paid Figma seat to make occasional static graphics that do not need its product-design workflow.

With this workflow

Rebuild a small set of static deliverables in Canva Free and keep source designs available for work that still needs Figma.

Good fit if…

  • Non-designers making internal announcement graphics or simple presentation visuals
  • People whose required deliverable is a static image or slide, not a reusable product-design file

Not for you if…

  • Product designers, interface prototyping or developers who need Figma source files
  • Teams maintaining shared components, design tokens or a production design system
  • Work requiring pixel-level parity with an existing Figma layout or paid Canva assets

Step by step

  1. 1

Confirm that the task really is a simple graphic

List the output dimensions, text, assets and required file format. If the request includes interactive prototypes, component behaviour or developer inspection, stop: this workflow does not cover it. Review the seat and plan that you actually pay for on Figma pricing.

  2. 2

Open the intended Canva Free account

Check Canva pricing and the account itself. Choose a free starting layout or a blank design and your own licensed assets. Do not assume a template or stock item is free because it appears in search. Confirm the intended export is available without payment.

  3. 3

    Rebuild one representative design

Use the original as a reference, not as a promise of editable import. Recreate the text hierarchy, spacing and image placement. Keep a written list of colour and type choices where useful. Do not call this a shared, enforced brand system.

  4. 4

    Check the exported deliverable

Export the format the recipient needs. Inspect the saved file at its actual display size and check text, cropping and links where relevant. Ask the recipient whether they need editable source, not just a picture that looks correct.

  5. 5

    Test a repeat task

Have the intended non-designer make the next routine update. Record manual adjustments and any blocked paid asset or export. If the work becomes slow or requires Figma handoff, keep the necessary seat rather than counting an unproven replacement.

  6. 6

    Change the paid seat carefully

Preserve original files and confirm ownership, collaboration and billing consequences with the workspace owner. Only remove or downgrade the seat whose paid work has fully passed the test. A successful social graphic does not justify cancelling the design team’s subscription.

Prompts you can use now

Copy as-is, or fill in the blanks first. Highlighted parts are placeholders.

Prepare a static-design brief

Optional assistant prompt for clarifying the task before a manual rebuild.

Fill in 4 blanks (optional)
Convert this request {{request}} into a static-design brief for {{audience}}. Required output: {{format_and_dimensions}}. Available approved assets: {{assets}}. List copy, visual hierarchy and export checks. Flag any need for interactive UI behaviour, reusable components or developer handoff as outside this brief. Do not invent brand colours or asset licences.

What you give up

  • The workflow is limited to static communication graphics and slides, not UI design or prototyping.
  • Canva Free may not include the assets, editing controls or export options you require.
  • Existing Figma files and component relationships are not automatically migrated.
  • Matching appearance is not the same as preserving editable source or a design system.

Before you cancel

Run these in parallel with your current tool. Only cancel when every box is ticked.

0/5 checks passed

Saved in this browser only. Cancel the old subscription only after every check passes.

How the savings work

Monthly saving = the bill you can actually stop paying, minus replacement upgrades, storage and seats, minus any retained subscription cost. Use your invoice and current vendor pricing pages; count a cancelled subscription once. Track migration and ongoing manual work separately. Cancellation is justified only when every paid use you need has passed the pilot.

Personalise this workflow
