Canva
Canva is a browser and mobile design editor built around a very large template library. The free plan covers most basic design work; paid plans add premium content, brand kits, the background remover, one-click resize, scheduling and a larger AI allowance. Business (which replaced Teams for new customers) and Enterprise add shared brand controls, locked templates and approvals.

Fit and scores (1–5) are editorial judgements. How we score
Why people pay for it
- Premium templates, photos and elements without watermarks
- Background remover and one-click resize across formats
- Brand Kits so logos, fonts and colours are one click away
- Team brand controls: locked templates and approvals so non-designers stay on-brand
- Larger AI allowance for generating images, text and drafts
- Scheduling designs directly to social accounts
Reasons to keep paying
The honest case for Canva. If these matter to you, don't switch.
- Brand kits plus locked brand templates let a whole team produce on-brand work without a designer
- Real-time collaboration, comments and approvals in a tool everyone already knows
- A very large library of templates and stock that saves hours per design
- Fast, precise-enough layout for print with built-in print ordering
- Existing designs live in Canva's format; rebuilding a template library elsewhere takes real time
Risks to know about
- mediumvendor lock in
Editable templates only work inside Canva. Leaving means keeping flat exports or rebuilding templates.
- mediumfunctionality loss
Downgrading from Pro to Free removes premium elements, background remover, resize and extra brand kits; designs using premium content become watermarked.
- lowip licensing
Premium stock is licensed for use within designs under Canva's licence terms; reuse outside those terms is restricted.
- mediumcollaboration
Pro is single-person. Teams sharing one Pro login breaks the terms; moving to Business costs per person.
- data portability: moderate
Designs export as PNG, JPG, PDF, SVG (paid), MP4 and PPTX, but not as an editable file other design tools can open with full fidelity. Brand kits and templates must be rebuilt elsewhere.
Workflows that replace Canva
- Design a print-ready restaurant menu with AI instead of CanvaKeep your menu as a simple list, have Claude or ChatGPT turn it into a clean, printable HTML menu (Letter or A4), and save it as a PDF from your browser. - Downgrade Canva Pro to Canva Free and use AI for images and copyKeep using Canva — just the free plan — for layouts and exports, and move image generation and caption writing to ChatGPT or Gemini that you already have. - Make YouTube thumbnails with ChatGPT instead of CanvaGenerate on-brand thumbnail backgrounds with ChatGPT image generation, then add your real face and exact headline text with a free HTML template or the OneLessTool in-browser composer.
