Replace Grammarly with AI: what you actually get (and lose)

Can ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot replace Grammarly? What an AI assistant you already pay for covers, what it doesn't, and how to test it before cancelling.

What we can say about savings: Grammarly's plans page doesn't show Grammarly Pro with a clear unit and billing period, so we don't quote a price or a saving. If you already pay for an AI assistant, the replacement costs $0 extra. Your saving is whatever your Grammarly invoice says.

What you actually get from an AI assistant

  • Grammar, spelling and tone fixes on demand, plus rewrites you control ("fix grammar only, keep my wording").
  • Longer edits Grammarly doesn't do well: restructuring a document, tightening a draft, adapting tone for an audience.
  • Built-in checkers you may already have: the spelling and grammar tools in Google Docs, Microsoft 365 and Edge, and Apple devices with Apple Intelligence.

What you lose

  • Inline checking everywhere you type. Grammarly underlines as you write in most apps. With an assistant you usually paste text in, or use whatever your editor has built in.
  • Over-editing. Assistants can change your voice unless you tell them not to. Ask for a list of changes, not a rewrite.
  • Style guides and brand tones. Style guides and brand tones are on paid plans: Pro includes one of each, Enterprise unlimited.

Test before you cancel

The drop Grammarly workflow gives prompts for a grammar-only pass and a tone pass, and a one-week checklist. Use it on your real writing alongside Grammarly's Free plan, which still covers core spelling and grammar. See the Grammarly page for plan details and sources.

When to keep Grammarly

Keep it if you write all day across many apps and rely on inline suggestions, or if your team depends on its style guides.

Check your own numbers

The audit is a free stack and savings calculator, and you don't need to sign up. List what you pay for and it shows keep, downgrade or drop line by line, with the arithmetic. OneLessTool has no affiliate links, so no recommendation earns us anything. If you want ongoing checks, the site has a waitlist for an upcoming Verified Savings Plan: "We'll watch your stack's prices and tell you what to drop. Joining the waitlist is free."
