Do you need Google AI Ultra? Downgrading Gemini without losing your storage

For people paying for Google AI Ultra: how to compare Google AI plans, when Pro or Plus is enough, and how to consolidate overlapping AI assistants safely.

Google AI plans bundle higher Gemini limits with Google storage and other Google services. Prices run from Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) and Google AI Pro ($19.99) to Google AI Ultra, from $99.99/month for the 5x tier and $199.99/month for the 20x tier. In order of risk:

Option 1: Drop to the plan you actually use

  • Usage. If you rarely hit Pro-level limits, moving from Ultra (20x) to Pro saves $180/month, and from Ultra (20x) to Ultra (5x) saves $100/month.
  • Storage first. These plans double as Google storage. Before downgrading, check that photos, Drive and Gmail fit within the lower plan's storage, or you may go over quota. Our Gemini page lists what each plan includes.
  • Work accounts. If your organisation uses Google Workspace, check whether your Business plan already includes the Gemini app before paying for a personal plan.

Option 2: Consolidate to one assistant

If you also pay for ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant, run the AI assistant consolidation workflow: a one-week test on your real tasks, then keep one. It costs $0 extra. If Gemini loses, cancelling Ultra (20x) saves $199.99/month.

When to keep paying

Keep a Google AI plan if you depend on its deep integration with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Android, need the storage it bundles, or use bundled extras such as YouTube Premium on some tiers.
