Cancelling Grok: what you keep on Free, and what changes on X and Cursor

What you lose when you cancel Grok Plus, Premium or a higher tier, including the X benefits and Cursor usage tied to The X Subscription, what Grok Free still gives you, and what to check before you cancel.

Typical savings: cancelling Grok Plus saves $8/month on month-to-month billing ($96 a year), and cancelling Premium saves $30/month ($360 a year). At the top end, cancelling Super saves $100/month and Ultra saves $200/month ($2,400 a year). Grok Free stays available at $0, so cancelling doesn't mean losing Grok entirely.

Grok's paid tiers aren't just an assistant any more. They come through The X Subscription, which also covers X benefits and a weekly allowance for eligible Cursor usage. Cancelling removes all of it at once, so check what else you're using before you cancel. For a summary of Grok's plans, see Do you still need Grok?. If you're on Ultra and only want to step down, see Do you still need Grok Ultra?.

Grok Free is from our Grok page, checked on cursor.com/pricing and x.ai/grok on 2026-10-13. The free tier is described only as limited usage, so test it on your own tasks before you rely on it.

What you lose, by tier

If you cancel Price saved What goes with it (from our catalog)
Plus $8/month Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, Grok API access, the X verified checkmark and fewer ads, and the weekly allowance for eligible Grok and Cursor usage
Premium $30/month 4x Plus usage, the latest Grok models, Grok Bot, AI image and video creation, and ad-free scrolling on most X surfaces
Super $100/month 15x Plus usage and priority model access at peak times
Ultra $200/month 50x Plus usage and earliest access to new products and models

Prices are US month-to-month from cursor.com/pricing, checked on 2026-10-13.

The three things people miss

  1. Your X benefits. The checkmark and fewer ads (Plus) and ad-free scrolling on most X surfaces (Premium and above) are tied to the same subscription.
  2. Cursor usage. Eligible first-party Grok and Cursor usage draws from the paid seat's weekly allowance. If you code in Cursor through this subscription, cancelling affects that too.
  3. Cancelling doesn't undo the switch. According to SpaceXAI's cancellation docs, cancelling The X Subscription doesn't reverse account unification or restore previous subscriptions. If you're still on a legacy plan, it continues unless you change or cancel it, so check which one you have first.

If you still want a paid assistant

If you already pay for another assistant, you may not need a replacement at all. If you don't, these are the closest paid options:

Plan Price Note
Google AI Plus $4.99/month Includes 400 GB storage
ChatGPT Go $8/month May include ads
ChatGPT Plus $20/month Deep research, Codex, projects and custom GPTs
Google AI Pro $19.99/month Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5 TB storage
Claude Pro $20/month Claude Code and Research

Prices are month-to-month from our pages for Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude, checked on 2026-10-13. None of them reads live X posts directly, which our catalog lists as the hardest part of Grok to replace.

Before you cancel

  • Download what you want to keep. Chats and generated media can be downloaded one at a time, so save the ones you need first.
  • Check commercial-use rules before you publish any images or video you made with Grok.
  • Write down what you used last month, such as the checkmark, Cursor or Imagine, and decide on each one separately.

Test before you cancel

Run the free workflow readiness check on our AI assistant consolidation workflow. Tick the assistants you have and confirm which plan each is on. Then record each test on your real tasks before you cancel anything. You don't need an account, your progress stays in your browser, and you can download the checklist as Markdown.
