Grok vs ChatGPT: what each plan costs side by side, and which one to keep
Grok Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra set against ChatGPT Go and Plus on verified US month-to-month prices, with what each bundle includes besides the assistant and how much you save by keeping one.
Typical savings: if you pay for Grok Premium ($30/month) and ChatGPT Plus ($20/month), you spend $50 a month on two assistants. Keeping only ChatGPT Plus saves $30/month ($360 a year). Keeping only Grok Premium saves $20/month ($240 a year). At the entry level, Grok Plus and ChatGPT Go are both $8/month, so dropping either saves $8/month ($96 a year). At the top end, someone paying for Grok Ultra ($200/month) as well as ChatGPT Plus spends $220 a month. If ChatGPT Plus covers that work, dropping Ultra saves $200/month, but Ultra's usage allowance is far larger, so test your heaviest weeks first.
Grok and ChatGPT aren't sold the same way. Grok's paid tiers come through The X Subscription, which also covers X benefits and eligible Cursor usage. ChatGPT's personal plans cover ChatGPT alone. So you're really choosing between a bundle and a standalone assistant. For a summary of Grok's plans, see Do you still need Grok?.
The plans side by side
| Grok tier | Price | ChatGPT plan | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Free | $0 |
| Plus | $8/month | Go | $8/month |
| Premium | $30/month | Plus | $20/month |
| Super | $100/month | Pro | Not verified (see below) |
| Ultra | $200/month | Pro | Not verified (see below) |
All prices are US month-to-month. They come from our Grok page (cursor.com/pricing, checked on 2026-10-13) and our ChatGPT page (chatgpt.com/pricing, checked on 2026-10-13). The rows pair plans by price, not by usage. The two vendors measure usage differently, so the allowances aren't directly comparable.
We don't show a price for ChatGPT Pro. OpenAI's pricing page gives only a starting price and offers three usage tiers without an exact price for each, so our catalog leaves it unknown. Check the vendor's page before comparing Pro with Grok Super or Ultra.
At the entry level the two cost the same. In the middle, ChatGPT Plus is $10/month cheaper than Grok Premium.
What each plan includes besides the assistant
| Grok (The X Subscription) | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry paid plan | Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, Grok API access, the X verified checkmark and fewer ads, and a weekly allowance for eligible Grok and Cursor usage | Go: more messages, uploads, image creation and voice than Free, longer memory. It may include ads |
| Main plan | Premium: 4x Plus usage, the latest Grok models, Grok Bot, AI image and video creation, ad-free scrolling on most X surfaces | Plus: advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research and Codex usage, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, apps that connect to internal tools |
| Higher usage | Super: 15x Plus usage and priority model access at peak times. Ultra: 50x Plus usage and earliest access to new products and models | Pro: a choice of three usage tiers, Dot (an always-on agent), and longer Codex sessions |
Features are from the same catalog pages. The capability comparison shows where the two overlap, job by job.
Keep Grok when
- Live posts and trends on X are part of the research you actually do. Other assistants see X only indirectly.
- You use the X benefits (the checkmark, fewer or no ads) or Cursor through the same subscription. Cancelling Grok means losing those too.
- Grok's image or video results beat ChatGPT's on your own tasks.
Keep ChatGPT when
- Your work depends on custom GPTs, projects or memory. Our catalog notes these are specific to ChatGPT and have to be rebuilt anywhere else.
- You use Codex, scheduled tasks or apps that connect to your internal tools every week.
- You don't use X or Cursor, so the bundle in Grok's price isn't worth anything to you.
Before you cancel either one
- Grok: check whether you're on The X Subscription or a legacy plan. According to SpaceXAI's cancellation docs, cancelling The X Subscription doesn't reverse account unification or restore your previous subscriptions. Chats and generated media can be downloaded one at a time.
- ChatGPT: export your chat history from settings as a data archive. Copy the instructions behind any custom GPTs and projects you rely on. On Free, Go and Plus, OpenAI's pricing page says content can be used for training unless you opt out, so check that setting on whichever plan you keep.
If you're on Grok Ultra, read how to replace Grok Ultra first. If you pay for more than two assistants, see how to find redundant AI subscriptions.
